Guns and Abortion

When you're right, you're right, and TexasInAfrica hit the nail on the head when she said to look out for the rush of gun-control and anti-gun-control articles. But I'm recommending this one anyway. I really don't know why we don't care about gun-control in this country, and why we are willing to be the most dangerous industrialized country in the world. We don't have to live this way, but we choose to, because some people just can't do without their "sacred" right to carry a weapon. I don't get it. It's dumb.

Why do you hate freedom, Jesus, baseball, and apple pie? Next time you're in Austin, we're going to the gun range so I can witness to you. :)

Seriously, as I explained for the fourth time this week to my last class today, it's messy. Even the language of the second amendment is fuzzy (to put it mildly), which leaves it open to a wide variety of interpretations. The debate is largely over, and not much will change as a result of this tragedy.

I'm not against people having guns to go hunting, but there is a ridiculous proliferation in this country of weapons whose only purpose is to kill other people. A Glock with hollow point bullets would make a mess of a deer. I know the 2nd amendment is a fuzzy issue --- does it really pertain to individuals, or a controlled militia, etc. -- but there needs to be some thought as to why we are such a dangerous country and what can be done about that, rather than blindly saying "but it's our right to have them". I personally don't think the conditions that necessitated the 2nd amendment exist any more, but that is obviously just my own opinion.

On another note, there was a town hall meeting about crime in Birmingham the other day. Two statistics were cited: 1) 80% of the violent crime in this city is black on black. 2) Most of those crimes (can't remember the exact percentage) are against acquaintances and family members, not strangers.
